Gain a deeper understanding of trauma from a clinical and scientific perspective

This course will offer valuable insights into how trauma impacts the human mind and behaviour. It will help you to understand the long-term effects of traumatic experiences, including how they shape emotional, cognitive, and physiological responses.

An Invitation from Thomas

I’m happy that Dr. Nicola Mitchell has agreed to offer this special seminar for our community.

As a clinical psychologist, she has both an academic and practioner’s understanding of the effects of trauma and the types of interventions and treatments that can be effective in the healing process. This is important foundational knowledge and will be especially helpful for those who do not already have formal training in psychology and psychotherapy.

I encourage our CTFT and ISTG participants, and all TWT graduates, who have an interest in deepening their understanding of trauma, to take advantage of this learning opportunity.

— Thomas

Studying trauma through a developmental lens provides an understanding of how trauma can affect individuals at different stages of life, from childhood through adulthood. We learn how early adverse experiences, such as abuse or neglect, can shape cognitive, emotional, and social development, leading to long-lasting psychological issues. We also gain insight into how early childhood trauma, for example, can disrupt attachment, emotional regulation, and cognitive development, while trauma experienced later in life can alter coping mechanisms and relationships.

By examining the different types of trauma—such as childhood abuse, combat stress, or natural disasters—we learn about the mechanisms behind trauma responses like PTSD, anxiety, and depression. This course will also include an overview of various interventions, from cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) to trauma-focused therapies, which aim to help individuals process and heal from traumatic experiences.

Vicarious trauma, another key area, highlights how individuals, such as therapists, healthcare providers or first responders, can experience trauma through indirect exposure to others’ suffering.

This multidimensional exploration will deepen your understanding of trauma’s widespread effects, the resilience and vulnerability of individuals affected by trauma, as well as the broader societal implications of trauma.

Introduction to Traumatology is offered in cooperation with the University of Witten/Herdecke in Germany. This course is very suitable for those who are not trained as psychologists or psychotherapists. The course is a special Module 7 in the CAS/CTIP program of Witten/Herdecke University, but is open to all graduates of TWT and CTFT. No academic credits are offered for this module.

“Trauma is an unintegrated part of the past that remains stuck in time, creating patterns of reactivity and limiting our ability to fully engage with the present.”
